Δ-8-THC (delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol)

Delta 8 THC is an analogue of THC, with small structural differences of a double bond placement. Delta 8 binds to CB1 and has an affinity for CB2 receptors, therefore, D8 produces a clearer euphoria while reducing anxiety and increasing ability to concentrate. Although Delta 8 THC is psychoactive, it possesses lower psychotropic activity than Δ-9-THC and has been referred to as a more functional substitute for D9THC. The euphoria following Delta 8 has been described as relaxed, clear-headed, energized and comfortable. Patients report this THC analog is useful as an antiemetic (nausea/vomiting), anxiolytic, appetite stimulator, analgesic, and neuroprotectant. We know that Delta 8boosts acetylcholine, resulting in potential for use in learning, memory, cognition, Alzheimer’s and dementia.

When taken orally, may take up to 4 hours to reach full effect, effects may last up to 12 hours!Although the onset of action is longer than that of 9-THC, the duration of action also outlasts the more traditional Delta 9 THC. This makes it a great daytime substitute, offering less impairment with potent benefits.

Most dried cannabis flower contains less than 1% of delta-8-THC; mostly, this cannabinoid is produced through extraction, isolation, conversion, and refinement of dried cannabis flower containing THC or CBD. Chemists experimenting with Delta 8 discovered some promising results; In 1975, researchers discovered it could shrink cancer tumors in rats.Israel scientists in 1995 administered Delta 8 to pediatric cancer patients who were suffering from nausea associated with chemotherapy and found it dramatically improved nausea, with a 100% success rate over 480 treatments. The USNational Cancer Institute reported a “lower psychotropic potency” that Delta 9 THC, meaning that Delta 8 is less associated with a stoned feeling. Many patients report that Delta 8 provides a general sense of well-being.

Delta 8 is a useful option for patients who have found little relief from a CBD regimen, have a low tolerance for THC, suffer from nausea or lack of appetite or want to manage their anxiety without risk of impairment. Ask your patient consultant if Delta 8 is a good fit with your treatment plan!
