New Year New You! - Goal Setting In The New Year

It's hard to believe, but we've made it to 2022!

This past Holiday Season brought a lot of joy, but now that it's the start of a new year, you may be thinking about new goals and habits you'd like to achieve.

January is the beginning of the year, therefore it's the perfect time to create new habits and routines to help us reach our goals and bring real change to our lives.

Whether it's to increase our health with an exercise routine, make more time for family, or do something we've never done before, the best way to accomplish our goals is to initially spend time thinking about them and writing them down, then creating a plan on how to achieve them.

Let's be honest. Goal setting and accomplishment isn't easy. When we seek to achieve a goal, we're doing so because it's often something we have yet to see or accomplish in our lives. Because of this, we have to create new habits and new ways of thinking and acting. Since we have had our own routines and habits built up over our lives, this can be quite challenging.

However, by planning out and focusing on "why" and "how" we can reach our goals, we can set our selves up for goal setting success!

What is your #1 Goal for 2022?

We often have a lot of ideas and goals for ourselves, and can overestimate what we can accomplish in one year while underestimating what we can do in ten years.

If you had to pick one major goal for this year, what would it be? By fine tuning what is most important, we can clear out the noise and focus our minds on what matters most.

Why do you want to achieve this goal?

To make a goal a reality, we need motivation to accomplish it, and our motivation comes from our "why".
Why do you want this goal? What does it mean to you?

The more descriptive and in touch you are with your own thoughts and feelings, the more relevant the goal is to you. The more you see how relevant it is to your life, the more likely you are to accomplish it.

Nothing is achieved without action and determination. Now that we know why you want it, it is time to determine the actions necessary to get you there.

What will change in your life when you reach this goal?

Our desire for a better life is what helps us envision goals, so how will we envision our life once that goal is met?

If your goal is to exercise and eat right this year, what will your body look and feel like in December 2022? How will that impact your physical and mental health?

If your goal is to spend more time with family each week, what will your family look and feel like in December 2022 with all the extra time spent?

Visualizing the impact of your hard work to reach this goal will help you understand why you should keep going, even in the face of contrast and days that challenge you.

What actions and habits need to be formed for you to reach your goal?

Nothing is achieved without action and determination. Now that we know why you want it, it is time to determine the actions necessary to get you there.

For example: If your goal is to exercise and eat right, then committing to a workout schedule is one positive and necessary action, while cutting back on meat and processed foods throughout the week would be another action.

List these out, but be mindful to not add too many. All you need are 1-3 actions that you didn't do last year or the year before. If you can stick with these new actions this year, they will eventually become habits and then your routine, which means you'll begin seeing real physical changes in your life.

How will you chart your progress?

Not many worthwhile goals are accomplished quickly. Most things in life take time. In order to help stay focused and committed to your goals, it's best to keep a journal, notebook, or vision board to keep your focus and to keep track of updates.

For example, you can use a notebook to keep track of all your exercise workouts and to make entries into it every time you spend quality time with family. Keeping track of your important data will keep you motivated along your journey, as well as allow you to get key insights on how well on target you are for hitting your goal.

How will you celebrate along the way?

Your main goal can be broken down into smaller goals, which you can use as celebratory checkpoints along the way to reaching your main goal.

For example, let's say you committed to your goal and showed up for your workout every day next month. That would be a great moment to celebrate your success and do something special for yourself, as a way to anchor in positive emotions in regards to getting closer to that goal.

It may not be fully finished or completed, but the fact that you are creating new habits and routines is definitely something to celebrate! These good feelings will help encourage you to fully keep going and accomplish your main goal.

What will you do when times get tough?

We're all going to have some tough days this year. It's going to be hard to stick with our new goals and routines, but it's essential that we do. What practices or ideas will you put into place so that when life gets hard, you don't forget about your goals?

Planning ahead and having a schedule are great tools for keeping you together and organized when life gets rough.

For example, if we are committing to a new diet, having our food purchased in advanced and prepped for the week ahead ensures that if time gets short and we get stressed out, we still are able to stick to our plan.

Doing the advanced work sets us up for long term success.
